Chess in Wales by Martyn Griffiths

Martyn Griffiths' book "Chess in Wales" has been published. Mr Griffiths' history of Welsh chess takes the reader on a journey from the Mabinogion, via Captain Evans, and the players of the twentieth century, to the present day.

The book consists of 338 pages, with 68 illustrations and 32 games, and includes an index of 800 Welsh chess players.

Cwmbrân Crows Win the League

Cwmbrân Crows are division one champions. David Cleverly won the D. O. Vaughan Trophy for the best performance over the season, and Jon Gilbert won the Houghton Trophy for the best percentage performance.

A few matches remain to be played in the second division. Malpas B and Abergavenny B are clear in first and second place. Abergavenny B have a match in hand from which they need only to win one game to win the second division.

Cwmbrân Crows win

Cwmbrân Crows won against Newport A to stay at the top of the first division. Abergavenny A have two games in hand, but need to win both to draw level.

Abergavenny B's loss to Newport Rooks keeps them one game point and one match point behind division two leaders Malpas B. Malpas C have three matches in hand and could still catch the two leaders.

Wins for Abergavenny A & B

Abergavenny A and B both won this week. A single game point now separates Cwmbrân Crows and Abergavenny A at the top of the first division.

In the second division, Abergavenny B are now a match point behind Malpas B with a game in hand.

Ioan Rees awarded FIDE Master Title

Congratulations to Ioan Rees on being awarded the FM title by FIDE.

WCU Open Jamboree

Sun 8th February 2009

Gwent won the Open Jamboree on tiebreak. The event, held at Ebbw Vale, was contested by teams from Dyfed/North Wales, East Glamorgan, Gwent, and West Wales.

WCU U1700 Jamboree

Gwent won the U1700 Jamboree on tiebreak.

WCU Annual General Meeting

The WCU AGM will be held at 7:30 pm, on Thursday 11th June 2009, at the Briton Ferry Constitution Club, Graig Road, Briton Ferry. [Map]

GCCA AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Gwent County Chess Association is to be held at Panteg House, Griffithstown at 19:15 on the 17th of June 2009.

Welsh Summer Congress

The South Wales Summer Congress will be held at Chepstow Leisure Centre between the 17th and 19th of July 2009. Further details and entry forms can be obtained from kevin [dot] stavely [at] btinternet [dot] com

West Wales Congress

The 42nd West Wales Congress will be held in the Glamorgan Arms Function Suite, Pontlliw, Swansea between the 16th and 18th of October 2009. Full details are on the entry form.
