Newport and District Chess League
The 2007/2008 Newport and District League season has finished. Abergavenny A have won the first division, and Monmouth B have won the second division.
League tables for division one and division two can be found on the Gwent Grading site together with further information about the league.

WCU Knockout Cup Finals
Two Gwent sides played in the WCU knockout cup finals at Briton Ferry Constitutional Club on the 29th of June. North Gwent lost 1½-2½ against Bridgend in the U1800 Cup final, and Newport lost ½-3½ against Castell Nedd in the U1500 Cup final.
Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of the GCCA was held at Panteg House on Wednesday the 18th of June.
The meeting elected the following new officials:
- Match Captains: Richard Miles (Open), Zane Allford (U2000) & Simon Butler (U1500)
- Summer Events Organiser: Wilf Arnold
- Hon. WCU Vice President: Andy Owen
New Book - A History of Chess in Wales
A History of Chess in Wales, by Martyn Griffiths, is being printed and will be published soon as a limited edition, A5 format hardback of approximately 340 pages, with around 50 photographs. The book can be ordered from Martyn Griffiths or Tony Peterson
Events
Gwent Lightning
The Gwent Lightning Tournament will be held from 7:30pm on Wednesday the 13th of August 2008 at Panteg House, Greenhill Road, Griffithstown. Players should be at the venue to register at 7:15pm. The tournament is open to Gwent players only.
The rules are:
- 10 secs between moves, reduced to 8 after 45 moves.
- After 25 mins (82 moves) the result of games will be decided on point count of pieces remaining (1 for a pawn, 5 for a rook etc.) - a difference of more than 3 gives a definite result.
