Chess in Wales by Martyn Griffiths

Martyn Griffiths' book "Chess in Wales" has been published. Mr Griffiths' history of Welsh chess takes the reader on a journey from the Mabinogion, via Captain Evans, and the players of the twentieth century, to the present day.

The book consists of 338 pages, with 68 illustrations and 332 games, and includes an index of 800 Welsh chess players.

Abergavenny A & Cwmbrân Crows win

This week saw wins for Abergavenny A and Cwmbrân Crows. Abergavenny A are now one point behind league leaders Monmouth, with a game in hand.

In the second division, the top of the table encounter between Malpas B and Abergavenny ended in a draw, leaving Maplas B at the top of the league.

Abergavenny and Pontypool won their matches to draw level with Monmouth at the top of the first division. In the second division Abergavenny B won their match to draw level with Malpas B on match points and are only one game point behind.

WCU U1500 Jamboree

Gwent and East Glamorgan contested this year's U1500 County Match over nine boards at Ebbw Vale on Sunday the 26th of October. The final score was East Glamorgan 11.5 - Gwent 6.5.

The top Gwent scorer was Phil Smith with 1.5/2

Robert Taylor Wins Gwent Closed

Robert Taylor scored 5/5 to win the 2008 Gwent Closed Championship held at Panteg House from the 26th to the 28th of September. See crosstable for full result.

Gwent Lightning

The Gwent Lightning Tournament was held at Panteg House on the 13th of August 2008. Eight players contested a six round Swiss, with Terry Hill and Stan Owen tying for first place with 5/6.

South Wales Winter Congress

The 34th South Wales Winter Congress will be held from Friday the 2nd to Sunday the 4th of January 2009 at the Chepstow Leisure Centre, Chepstow.
