Congratulations to Newport Chess Club for achieving the double. Their A won by division 1 by 1 point over Malpas A. Newport B can't be caught at the top of division 2 with one game to go. Pontypool B will finish second.

With just two games left in division 1, Newport A have a narrow 1 point lead over Malpas A. In division 2, Newport B have a commanding 3 point lead over Pontypool B.

The funeral for Steve Christmas will be on 1 April, 2.15 pm, at Thornhill Crematorium.

Sadly, I have to report that Steve Christmas passed away on Wednesday 6th March. Steve had been diagnosed with cancer just a few months ago.

Those who knew Steve might also have known his oldest daughter Rose Christmas, a keen chess player like her father. Steve also leaves a wife Theresa, and younger daughter Cherry.

I would be grateful if you would pass this message on to anyone who would have known Steve through Pontypool Chess Club and the Gwent league. As yet, I don't have details of the funeral but I should know next week.

Kind regards

Brenda Miles
